Dairy & Animal Science Research

The Department of Dairy and Animal Science is internationally recognized for its research programs. These programs exist in three major categories: ruminant nutrition, animal and farm operation management, and physiology.

Research topics in the ruminant nutrition program include dairy heifer nutrition, nutrition of the transition and early lactation cow, the use of alternative feedstuffs (including by-products), rumen function and metabolism, reducing nitrogen flow into the environment, and the optimization of microbial populations.

Our animal and farm operation management program studies forage and pasture systems, dairy heifer rearing, environmental protection, workforce management, information technology, business management, and nutrient management.

The physiology research program focuses on growth and development, location and mammary gland function, reproductive biology, genomics, meat science and muscle biology, and neuroendocrinology.
